New York Jets 2014 Season: Predicting the Final 53-Man Roster

Soon players will know if all of the hard work in practices and preseason games will pay off in the end. The New York Jets need to get their roster down to 53-men before Week 1 of the regular season, and that means some big names may be cut. Who will stay and who will go as we approach the start of the 2014 season?

Geno Smith, Michael Vick, Matt Simms

Smith is the No. 1 guy for the New York Jets, and if all goes right, Vick should never see the field. Simms beat out rookie Tajh Boyd for the No. 3 spot, so it looks like the Jets are set at quarterback for 2014.

Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Tommy Bohanon, Daryl Richardson

This Jets group of running backs may be one of the most underrated in the league. Johnson and Ivory should provide some thunder (Ivory) and lightning (Johnson) on the ground for Gang Green. Rex Ryan said he wants to carry four true running backs this season, so Richardson should grab the last spot over the underachieving Alex Green.

Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, David Nelson, Stephen Hill, Greg Salas, Saalim Hakim

The question here is Stephen Hill and if he deserves a spot on the roster over someone like Clyde Gates. My answer is yes, for now, but this may be the last chance for Hill to prove himself. I also like Greg Salas over Jalen Saunders because the Jets already have Hakim penciled in on kick returns. I have a feeling, though, that Saunders may beat out Salas.

Jeff Cumberland, Jace Amaro, Zach Sudfeld

Amaro is the guy to watch out for here. He led the team in receptions during the preseason, and he has some high upside. The rookie from Texas Tech may force his way into the starting lineup if his play translates to the regular season.

Starters: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Brain Winters, Nick Mangold, Willie Colon, Breno Giacomini
Reserves: Oday Aboushi, Ben Ijalana, Dalton Freeman, Dakota Dozier

The Jets should be solid on the line with the addition of Giacomini in place of the former tackle Austin Howard. A lot of fans will like Giacomini because he plays with passion and he plays hard on every down. Also look for Winters to have a bounce-back season in 2014.

Starters: Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison
Reserves: Kenrick Ellis, Leger Douzable

I would love to give a spot to DT T.J. Barnes, because he is well deserving of a place on this roster. He is a big-bodied guy who plugs the middle of the defensive line, but the Jets don't have much room for him and it's a shame. Besides my gripe about Barnes, this defensive line is still one of the best, if not the best, in the league.

Starters: David Harris, Demario Davis, Calvin Pace, Quinton Coples
Reserves: Jason Babin, Nick Bellore, Garrett McIntyre, IK Enemkpali, A.J. Edds

The standout here is rookie Enemkpali. He's had a great preseason and he deserves to make the roster. Jason Babin is listed as a linebacker, but look for the Jets to move him all over the field and use him in blitz packages. Davis is poised for a breakout season; keep an eye on him.

CB: Dee Milliner, Dimitri Patterson, Darrin Walls,
Reserve: Kyle Wilson, Ellis Lankster, LeQuan Lewis

SS: Calvin Pryor, Dawan Laundry
FS: Antonio Allen Jaiquawn Jarrett

This group of Jets corners may change multiple times during the season. Look for waiver pickups, trades and everything else. The Jets will start the year without No. 1 CB Dee Milliner, so they need to adjust quickly and some new guys need to step up.

Nick Folk
Ryan Quigley
Tanner Purdum

Quigley has been on the chopping block for a while now, but the Jets don't have many other options. He better play well out of the gate or he could be replaced sooner rather than later.
