Pittsburgh Steelers 2014 Season: Predicting the Final 53-Man Roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers are nearing the end of their preseason schedule and getting ready for the real games. This also means that the team needs to cut a lot of players to have a regulation roster. These are the players who should be on the Steelers' final 53-man roster.

These spots were never really up for grabs. Jones and Gradkowski have been battling to back up Roethlisberger, but all three will make the final roster.

The Steelers only need these three running backs and then the fullback Johnson for different packages. The team may opt to keep a fifth back with Bell and Blount in legal trouble, but since they likely won't be suspended this season, it's not likely the Steelers keep five rushers.

Antonio Brown, Wheaton, Moore and Bryant are locks for the final roster. Justin Brown and Heyward-Bey could be fighting for the final wide receiver spot. Both have impressed in camp and in the preseason, so I think the Steelers decide to keep an extra receiver rather than cut one of their best preseason performers.

Miller and Spaeth will make the roster based on experience. The real battle is for the third tight end spot with Blanchflower, David Paulson and Michael Palmer. Paulson had a slight edge coming into camp, but the team has been raving about Blanchflower since the 2014 NFL Draft ended. They could opt to put him on the practice squad, but I think the potential gets Blanchflower on the roster.

There aren't many battles on the line this year, so most of these players are set. Wallace is the backup center, Hubbard is the backup guard and Johnson's versatility is too great to let go. Adams could be cut in favor of Guy Whimper, but Adams still has potential which will help him stay on the roster.

The defensive line seems to be set now. The Steelers can go with six defensive linemen because Cam Thomas can play end or nose tackle. Keisel adds another defensive end option and likely knocks rookie Josh Mauro off of the roster. But if the Steelers decide to cut down somewhere else, Mauro could be added to the squad as a reserve lineman.

Jarvis Jones, Ryan Shazier, Lawrence Timmons, Jason Worilds, Vince Williams, Sean Spence, Arthur Moats, Terence Gavin, Howard Jones

The linebacker situation is difficult for the Steelers. They have four players battling for two spots. Howard Jones should make the roster over veteran Chris Carter because he is a better special teams player. And Garvin should stick on the team over Jordan Zumwalt because he has needed experience at ILB.

Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen, William Gay, Troy Polamalu, Mike Mitchell, Shamarko Thomas, Will Allen, Brice McCain, Robert Golden, Shaquille Richardson

All of these players are guaranteed a spot except Richardson. He and Antwon Blake are battling for a spot, but I think that Richardson wins the battle because he is younger and has the higher ceiling.

Suisham is a lock, but other than that no one is safe. Warren is currently hurt, but if he's ready for the start of the regular season, he should make it. Podlesh is a bold choice because he is on leave from the Steelers, but Brad Wing has been awful. The Steelers could sign another punter after cuts, but at this time Podlesh should have a small edge.
