With the 2014 NFL preseason now over, it’s time for the Green Bay Packers to make their final cuts to get the roster down to 53 players. Since Green Bay has one of the deepest rosters of any team in the league this year there are several difficult cuts that will have to be made. Here’s a look at five bold cuts the Packers will end up making on Aug. 30.

Ryan Taylor is phenomenal on special teams, which is why the Packers would like to keep him on the 53-man roster. However, Jake Stoneburner has looked outstanding during the preseason at tight end. In fact, he’s tied for second on the team with six receptions. Of course, that doesn’t mean much because the fourth tight end on the roster typically only plays special teams. With that said, Stoneburner is an emerging talent who shouldn’t be cut.

It might come as a shock to some fans that the Packers are deep at defensive back this year. Unfortunately, the quality of depth means that cornerback Jumal Rolle will have to be cut. Rolle has put up solid numbers during the preseason, but he looked shaky against the Chiefs. It doesn’t really matter what he did in his final preseason game because Green Bay can’t move on from Jarrett Bush or Davon House.

3. Nate Palmer, LB

Outside linebacker Nate Palmer played decent as a rookie in 2013. Heading into camp, he was a near lock to make the 2014 roster. However, the emergence of undrafted rookie Jayrone Elliot has given the Packers enough reason to move on from Palmer. Elliot leads the NFL with five sacks in the preseason. Considering Green Bay’s need for a pass rush, Elliot isn’t going anywhere.

2. John Kuhn, FB

The decision on John Kuhn will be incredibly difficult to make. There’s speculation that the Packers will keep four halfbacks (Lacy, Starks, Harris, Kuhn), but I don’t see how the team can move on from LaDarius Perkins. He has put together an outstanding performance in the preseason. His 5.6 yards per carry against the Chiefs was enough to make the team. The Packers may decide to keep Perkins as the fourth HB while listing Kuhn as a fullback.

I have said all along that Green Bay will only keep two quarterbacks on the final roster. It’s a wise decision that will be made by Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson. Even though Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien were even with their performances against the Chiefs, Tolzien clearly has the stronger arm. As much as I would hate to see Flynn be cut, the correct move is to move forward with Tolzien.
