Final cuts day is the least fun day of the NFL year. On the bright side, 10 guys will get spots on the Colts' practice squad. The rest of these guys, however, will either find spots with new teams or will head off toward new horizons. Here are six players Indy is sadly letting go.

Sheppard's absence was the surprise of the day. The former third-round pick came to the Colts in a trade with the Buffalo Bills in April 2013. The Bills got defensive end Jerry Hughes, who at the moment is still on their 53-man roster. Last season Sheppard started seven games and contributed in fifteen.

Another member of Stanford midwest, Howell was listed as "Injured/Waived" after suffering a neck injury last season that's turned into something scarier than expected. The word is that it's season ending, but not career ending. So long as Howell clears waivers, he'll revert to the Colts' injured reserved and hopefully return next year. There was hope that he'd become a solid replacement for Antoine Bethea.

Jackson was injured on essentially the final snap against the Bengals, leading some to wonder if, at the end of the day, he might end up on the Colts' IR. He was their sixth-round draft pick (203rd overall), another small school player (Western Kentucky) and memorable for, if nothing else, his presidential name.

3. RB-David Fluellen

Fluellen wasn't with the Colts for long, but he did have the unique distinction of being "the running back the Colts traded their spare kicker for." On Aug. 20, the Colts sent kicker Cody Parkey to the Philadelphia Eagles and got Fluellen in return, in what seemed like an entertaining fantasy league move. The Colts kept four running backs: Richardson, Bradshaw, Herron and the immortal Zurlon Tipton.

2. DE-Tyler Hoover

Hoover drew curious eyes last week against the Bengals as "the defensive end who had to play on the offensive line" to protect embattled Chandler Harnish. He'd practiced as a lineman for a week or two prior to getting called into the role. Should he return to the Colts' practice squad, it will be interesting to see what position he plays.

1. WR-Josh Lenz

Lenz got some face time during preseason, scoring a couple of touchdowns, but suffering a couple of miscues on special teams (and making us appreciate the quiet stability of Griff Whalen all the more). The Colts kept six receivers: Wayne, Hilton, Nicks, Moncrief, Whalen and Rogers. Lenz had been with the Colts' practice squad since November 2013, and may very well end up there again this season.
