Top 5 Landing Spots For DE Michael Sam

After being cut by the St. Louis Rams, the first openly-gay professional football player is a free agent. After his performances in preseason, Sam will not be unemployed for too long. The rookie out of Missouri did a great job generating pressure. Although he could be a nuisance, Sam is a good football player and these five teams should take a look at signing him.

The Atlanta Falcons were one of the worst teams in the NFL last year at generating pressure. Now a year later, the Falcons didn't add much defensive line help to solve that problem. After selecting Jake Matthews in the first round, the Falcons bypassed on pass rushers. While he wouldn't be a day-one starter, Sam would be a good rotational player.

Gus Bradley is one of the smartest defensive minds in the NFL, and with some tutelage from him, Sam could become a really good football player. While playing in Jacksonville, Sam would be playing for a small-market team. This would help him because he could actually focus on football and not off-field problems. It would be interesting to see what Bradley could do with Sam.

The Chicago Bears were another team that couldn't get to the quarterback in 2013. Although they added Jared Allen and LaMarr Houston in free agency, you can never have too many pass rushers in the NFL. By bringing in Sam, the Bears could have Allen mentor the rookie. Sam could learn a lot from Allen as the latter has been around this league for many years.

I thought the New England Patriots were going to draft Sam in the later rounds of May's draft. I thought this because the Patriots are notorious for taking on players with concerns. While Sam doesn't have off-field concerns, he does have a media circus following him everywhere. Bill Belichick is a no-nonsense coach and he would make Sam focus on football and nothing else.

It's safe to say that the Dallas Cowboys have the worst defense in the NFL. After losing second-round pick DeMarcus Lawrence to a foot injury and George Selvie to a shoulder injury, the Cowboys would benefit by bringing in Sam. There is always a media circus in Dallas, but the Cowboys have perhaps the best defensive line coach in the league in Rod Marinelli. Pair Marinelli with Leon Lett and Sam could become a star in Dallas.
