Final cut day is always one of the tougher days in any offseason, and yesterday, the Detroit Lions had to let go some good players who were talented. Yesterday was filled with anticipation, disappointment and sometimes even surprises. Here are the five most surprising roster cuts for the Detroit Lions in 2014.

The signing and release of Michael Egnew was one of the strangest transactions the Lions made this offseason. After signing Egnew, who was previously released by the Miami Dolphins last week, Egnew was cut by Detroit this week. Whether he gets another chance with Detroit is up for grabs as the Lions have three quality tight ends already on the roster.

Surprisingly, the Lions decided to keep just five CBs on the active roster even though it is their biggest position of need. Reserve corner Nate Ness was cut along with Chris Greenwood yesterday, but Ness was the more productive player. Against Buffalo, Ness recorded an interception in a 23-0 rout. The Lions will have to definitely find another corner down the stretch to help their woeful pass defense.

Garrett Reynolds started 10 games last season for Atlanta and was signed this offseason by the Lions, but he was released yesterday. Reynolds has had experience starting at both tackle and guard.

Rodney Austin was one of the players who I thought would have a good opportunity to make the roster this season, but that didn't happen. After spending last year on the practice squad, Austin could once again go back there if the Lions choose to keep him. As of now, Detroit has only one reserve interior lineman on their active roster (third-round rookie Travis Swanson).

A long-time backup for the Lions, defensive tackle Andre Fluellen was also cut yesterday. Fluellen will likely be kept on the practice squad given Nick Fairley's recent issues and no proven backups on the roster at that position.
