5 Most Surprising St. Louis Rams' Roster Cuts Of 2014

The St. Louis Rams had some tough decisions to make in order to get down to 53 players on their roster. St. Louis had to let some solid talent loose, and was unable to retain them all on the practice squad, although some relationships were salvaged.

Here's a look at the Rams' five most surprising roster cuts.

After Sam Bradford tore his ACL and was deemed out for the season, it appeared like the Rams would keep three quarterbacks on the roster to ensure depth, but they chose a different path and only added Shaun Hill and Austin Davis to the 53-man roster. Gilbert did sign with the practice squad, however.

Considering Lamarcus Joyner is St. Louis' starting nickelback despite being listed as a safety on the roster, there was a feeling the Rams might add an additional safety to the team. Matt Daniels appeared to have the best chance to fill the role, but St. Louis opted to go with ten defensive backs, and cut Daniels. Though, he ultimately signed to the practice squad.

3. Mitchell Van Dyk, Offensive Tackle

Van Dyk spent the whole preseason behind Jake Long on the left tackle depth chart. Considering Long is coming off of ACL surgery which held him out of most of the preseason, it appeared the rookie seventh-round pick had a path onto the team, but the Rams opted to go in a different direction. Van Dyk was not kept on as a practice squad member.

With Stedman Bailey suspended for the first four games of the season, and Austin Pettis unable to separate himself from the rest of the WRs fighting for a final spot, it appeared Veltung, who had a solid showing this summer, had an inside track to make the team. But the Rams decided to keep just five WRs, and Pettis narrowly kept his job, for now. St. Louis did sign Veltung to the practice squad, though.

In a surprising development, Sam was not only cut from the 53-man roster, but also did not make it to the Rams practice squad, which looked to be where he was headed at the minimum considering his solid showing this summer. The undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks had such an eye opening preseason that Sam's chances diminished each week, even while his play improved. Sam's future in the NFL is highly uncertain at this point.
