Now that the New England Patriots have trimmed their roster down to 53 players, the smoke has finally cleared in Foxboro. Here are five players on the Patriots’ roster who are primed to have breakout seasons in 2014.
Dobson looked very sharp in the final preseason game against the New York Giants, snaring an underthrown Jimmy Garoppolo pass for a touchdown. Evidently, the Marshall product has developed significantly since last year, and he stands to be an integral part of the Patriots’ aerial attack.
With Shane Vereen being more of a weapon in the passing game, White is hot on Stevan Ridley’s tail for carries. If Ridley can’t solve his ball security issues, White could very well find himself the main guy in the Pats’ ground game. At the very least, he will be given a healthy portion of touches every game.
As some of you may remember, Collins came on strong late last season. The speedy and powerful 6-foot-3, 250-pounder will only build on that success as an outside linebacker in the Patriots’ 3-4 scheme. It’s hard not be excited about Collins as the 2014 season begins.
Butler came out of nowhere to make the Patriots 53-man roster this summer, managing to stand out in a crowded secondary. The undrafted rookie continues to ascend and may end up starting opposite Darrelle Revis this Sunday. With Roy Finch now off the team, Butler will be the sole bearer of the No. 29 jersey.
Dennard has been the forgotten man in the Patriots’ cornerback group with the flood of newcomers and the excitement surrounding Logan Ryan, but don’t sleep on him. He is sticky in coverage, a sure tackler and has a nose for the ball. On any other team, Dennard would be a definite starter.
