Week 1 is a huge game for the New York Jets at home against the Oakland Raiders. With one of the toughest schedules in the first half of the season, the game against the Raiders looks to be the one the Jets have to win. Oakland has decided that Derek Carr will be their guy in Week 1, and with Carr being a rookie, the Jets’ defense needs to step up and make a statement even with their issues at cornerback.
Quite possibly the biggest advantage the Jets have in this game is their extremely talented front seven that could be one of the best in the NFL. In Week 1, they will need to play like one and rattle the Raiders’ young quarterback, much like teams did to his older brother David Carr.
“Gotta be pure dominance, if (nothing) else,” Sheldon Richardson told ESPN. “Pure dominance. That’s all I can think of right now, just dominating and dominating the run, because this team last year was the only team that ran for over 100 yards (against us).”
The Raiders saw a lot of success on the ground against the Jets last season, and with a rookie QB and new running back Maurice Jones-Drew, Oakland will likely try to establish the run to try and help make it simple for Carr with some quick passes and then play action if they can run it well.
In college Carr struggled against pressure, completing just 29 percent of his passes, which was the worst of all the QB prospects coming into the NFL this season. Carr has shown signs that he could be a good QB, as he had ridiculous stats in college as well as a good preseason.
Having Carr start for the Raiders is a very good thing for the Jets, as Rex Ryan has had success against some of the best QBs in the NFL. Going against a rookie at home to start the season, even with a weak secondary, should result in a Jets victory in Week 1.
