After being without Adrian Peterson for two weeks, it is clear the Minnesota Vikings need help at running back. One guy they should take a chance on is former San Francisco 49ers back LaMichael James, who requested his release from the team, went through waivers and is now a free agent.

The Vikings are currently using a two back system in Matt Asiata and rookie Jerick McKinnon, but the duo only combined for 79 all-purpose yards in Week 3. In Week 2 they combined for 43 yards on the ground, and Asiata added five catches for 48 yards and a touchdown.

The 2012 second-round pick was a standout at Oregon and hasn’t been given an opportunity to prove himself in the NFL as of yet. The Vikings need a player in the backfield who can hit a “home-run” type of play, and James can bring that sort of playmaking ability.

James has just 41 career rushes for 184 yards but did rush for 65 yards and a touchdown on 11 attempts in the 2012 playoffs. James is quick and elusive, but he’s also capable of running between the tackles when need be. He also has great vision and is a capable pass-catcher.

It takes a village to replace the best running back in the game and it is evident the Vikings need extra help in the backfield. Having a respectable running game will open up the play-action attack and passing game. Also, with Teddy Bridgewater now starting, a strong running game will take pressure off of the rookie quarterback.
