The Indianapolis Colts‘ offense has shown throughout the first four weeks of the NFL season that they can play at a high level no matter who they are playing. A big reason why they are able to do that is because of their offensive line.
Going into the season, the offensive line was a big question mark. There was the injury to Khaled Holmes and there were questions on how well rookie Jack Mewhort would play. Well, through the first four weeks of the season, those questions have been put to rest.
The Colts’ offensive line has paved the way for the running game all season long. The Colts are currently ranked 14th in total rushing yards and 18th in average rushing yards. Those are big improvements from last year, and it could be the difference in the playoffs where they might have to run the ball to win.
The biggest thing the Colts’ offensive line has done is give Andrew Luck time to pass. The Colts are the No. 1 ranked passing team in the NFL. That has a lot to do with how much time Luck has to throw the ball. When you give a guy like Luck time to throw the football, special things can happen.
The injury to Holmes should speak to how well the line has been playing. They signed A.Q. Shipley late in the preseason and he has done a great job of communicating protections to the rest of the offensive line. At this point, people are starting to wonder if they should bring back Holmes because it could mess up the chemistry along the offensive line.
There was no question that the Colts and Luck had the weapons to be great on offense this year. The question was whether Luck would have time to get the ball to them. After four weeks, he has plenty of time thanks to his offensive line.
