Vontae Davis signed a massive deal in the offseason with the Indianapolis Colts, which meant that he has big expectations to live up to. Throughout his career, he has never been consistent enough to be considered an elite cornerback. The talent has been there, and I haven’t read anything about him being lazy, so I’m going to assume he is a hard worker.
But now, through the first four weeks of this season, Davis has shown that he can play at a high level. Against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, Davis forced Manning to go to other receivers. He only allowed one completion to go for five yards and he was thrown to five times. Davis did a great job of taking away whomever he was covering against an elite quarterback.
Against the Philadelphia Eagles, Davis continued to play well. He was matched up against Riley Cooper for most of the game and again held his guy in check. Davis had two pass deflections and held Cooper to one reception for three yards. The third game was against the lonely Jacksonville Jaguars, and he managed to get his first pick of the year. What he did against the Jags shouldn’t be surprising, but that was his third game in a row of playing great football.
Finally against the Tennessee Titans, he got the Richard Sherman treatment. The Titans didn’t throw to him once during the game.
Davis has put together four straight games of elite cornerback play. This could be a sign of him turning the corner. Consistency was the one thing that was missing for him, and after a quarter of the season, he has shown he can string together some great games.
