If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

In the case of the Oakland Raiders – wrap things up and start thinking about a new year. The Raiders are in more than just a black hole. The Raiders are currently 0-4 heading into a bye week and are now without a permanent head coach. The worst thing about the rest of the season is the Raiders play some of the toughest teams in the league, including the San Francisco 49ers, the Denver Broncos (twice) and the 2014 Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. The Raiders season is going from bad to worse.

Oakland is at a point of no return. There is very little chance the team can rally and win nearly all of their last 12 games to turn this season into something less than a disappointment. It may be time for the Raiders organization to look into making a clean slate and getting ready for the 2015 season.

There is not much else that can be done in Oakland. Getting rid of a coach that was not producing satisfactory results was a step, but the players are the ones out on the field every week not making plays and not scoring touchdowns.

The team gave up long before the organization fired head coach Dennis Allen. One of the team’s most beloved players, Charles Woodson, admitted defeat after the Week 2 loss to the Houston Texans.

“We’re not very good,” Woodson told San Jose Mercury News. “We suck.”

That is hard to hear from a player who has spent 10 seasons with the Raiders and has seen them both prosper and fail. In the interview, Woodson went on to place blame on both the offense and the defense. He also mentioned that Raider fans should be embarrassed by the efforts of their team. Every aspect of the team needs to improve and, unfortunately, it will take more than 12 weeks to make such improvements.

It takes time to evaluate defense, offense, missing pieces and an efficient coaching staff. With the harsh words from a player, the lack of a leader in a head coach and a seemingly incapable Captain-Kangaroo-coiffed owner, the Raiders’ 2014 season is becoming a wash. The team’s best bet is to be optimistic about 2015 and make the necessary improvements to finish next season with a championship.
