New York Jets’ Offense Looks Disturbingly Bad In Week 5 Loss

After their Week 1 win over the Oakland Raiders (the NFL‘s whipping boy), the New York Jets have gone on a four-game losing streak that is getting uglier and uglier every week. In Week 2 they allowed the Green Bay Packers to mount a very solid comeback in the second quarter after being handed a beautiful lead early. Weeks 3 and 4 saw the Jets losing to the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions, 27-19 and 24-17 respectively. In Week 5 it got so much worse.

Geno Smith didn’t issue any verbal or physical obscenities this week — at least none that were caught on camera — but prior to his being pulled in favor of Michael Vick, he threw four completions on 12 passes with one interception. That probably offended fans roughly as much as his infamous verbal incident last week. Vick was brought in to relieve Smith but did not fare much better.

Vick’s first 10 throws consisted of one completion for seven yards. He ended the day with nine completions out of 20 passes for just 47 yards.

The rushing game looked better than the passing game, but not by much. Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson have combined for some great performances in the first few weeks of the season, but against the San Diego Chargers, the entire Jets’ offense was rough. Ivory had a decent day; he rushed nine times for 44 yards, which is just under five yards per carry. Johnson had a rough day, rushing seven times for 27 yards, with a reception for minus-2 yards and a lost fumble.

Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley led the team’s receivers with 24 yards on three catches.

While they looked at least close to passable in previous weeks, the Jets have hit a dangerous low. Their running backs can only do so much, and Ivory and Johnson can’t be expected to carry an offense every week. Neither quarterback looks like a starter in the NFL.

While in previous weeks fans and critics could both say positive things about the Jets’ play, there is nothing that a rational person can say after their 31-0 spanking by the Chargers. Oh wait, Ivory rushed for an average of 4.9 yards per carry and the linebacker Calvin Pace had two sacks. Let’s have a “golf clap” for Pace and Ivory.
