Quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers sit atop the NFL’s best, but Russell Wilson wants his name up there with some of the greats. The young quarterback from Wisconsin already has a Super Bowl ring on his finger and is off to a great start in the 2014 season. After his MVP-like performance against the Washington Redskins on Monday Night, maybe we are overlooking the fact that a new star has already risen.
Wilson led the Seattle Seahawks to a 27-17 victory against the Redskins; he was pretty much unstoppable. The Seahawks’ quarterback had 201 yards passing, 122 rushing and 3 total touchdowns. Wilson’s ability to scramble and make plays happen with his feet reminds me of Michael Vick in his prime and it was on full display in Week 5.
Wilson is so dangerous because opposing defenses don’t know if he is going to scramble, fake it or burn them on a deep play. With the great Marshawn Lynch behind him and a top-notch defense on the other side of the ball, Wilson has all the tools to be a force in this league not just this season but for many more to come.
Anointing Wilson as an elite quarterback is not based on his Week 5 performance against the Redskins — it’s been a long time coming. He has shown the ability to take a team to the Super Bowl, and win it all. Right now, he’s proving to the world that his 2013 season was not a one-and-done type of deal. What makes Wilson great is his ability to take care of the ball and avoid mistakes. He knows when to take a chance down the field for a big play and he also knows when to tuck it and run.
Don’t look now, but Wilson is building a strong resume and he is still only 25 years old. Sure, Wilson isn’t flashy — he doesn’t throw for 300-plus yards every week like a Manning or a Rodgers — but he knows how to win and that stands above the rest. Everyone doubted him when he came into the league, including myself, but I’ve grown to realize that Wilson is on his way to being one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Wilson may not be the biggest guy on the field or the one with the strongest arm, but he knows how to win and if he continues to do that then he will find himself amongst the NFL’s elite quarterbacks sooner than later.
