LaMarr Houston And NFL Players Should Speak Their Minds More Often

LaMarr Houston

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Bears fans tweeted their disappointment towards defensive end LaMarr Houston following yet another painful loss; this one came to the Carolina Panthers after blowing a 14-point lead. The enraged fan tweets were to be expected. The response from Houston blasting fans for being upset with so much of the season left to be played caught fans off guard. It caught the attention of the media and quickly became a topic of controversy and outrage.

NFL players have done this before and are always met with outrage from fans. The players are scolded by coaches and condemned in the media for speaking their mind. Case in point, there is an article on this very website that suggests Houston should think before he types and stay off Twitter. Really? In today’s over prepared, rehearsed and completely vanilla comments fed to the media by athletes and media alike, are we really complaining when an undoubtedly real comment is released?

It’s time we hear something real. Aren’t fans tired of hearing coach-speak and players who give the same responses to most every question? Think about that the next time you hear Russell Wilson mention in a presser before playing the Jacksonville Jaguars that they know they have their work cut out for them in the upcoming game, the Jaguars have playmakers all over the field and it will take their best effort to win the game. Right. Just before the Seattle Seahawks destroy them by three or more touchdowns.

I want raw, real statements. If the Bears linebacker hates Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, let’s hear it in social media. Engage with the fans who are not shy about expressing their feelings. The athletes who break the corporate mold and add reality to a reality TV addicted public will lead NFL fandom into a new era that adds personal feelings into an often emotionless game.

Bring it on LaMarr Houston. Give us more and make it real.
