Matter Of Time Before Percy Harvin Explodes For Seattle Seahawks

Percy Harvin‘s statistics in 2014 may not wow anyone. Harvin has 19 receptions for 133 yards and eight rushes for 93 yards through four games. Those are solid numbers, but it’s only a matter of time before the Seattle Seahawks‘ wide receiver has a huge game. It almost came two days ago on Monday Night Football. Harvin had three touchdowns called back in the game against the Washington Redskins because of penalties, two of which were questionable calls. He ran through and got behind the Redskins’ secondary on all three plays. In other words, he is having a greater impact on the game than the box score would suggest.

A large portion of Harvin’s value comes from the fact that he always has to be accounted for on the football field. His ability to take a short play and turn it into a long touchdown forces defenses to follow him, opening things up for Marshawn Lynch and the Seahawks’ running game. That is mostly how Seattle has utilized Harvin this season: as a decoy. Most of his touches have been on bubble screens and handoffs. He’s essentially been a second running back for the Seahawks outside the numbers.

Seattle’s coaching staff is smart, though, and they are likely setting things up for Harvin to start having a bigger impact. They have yet to stretch the field using Harvin – last week’s long touchdown reception got called back. That could change this week. The speedy receiver has a great matchup coming up at home against a weak Dallas Cowboys secondary. The Seahawks will surely look to the ground game, as they always do. But this could be the game Harvin really makes an impact on the stat sheet. You could tell the chemistry between Russell Wilson and Harvin is still developing, and he’ll certainly look for his wide out this week.

The Seahawks’ offense is one of the most improved in the NFL this year. The trio of Wilson, Lynch and Harvin makes them extremely hard to defend for opposing teams. Wilson just had a huge game against the Redskins. Lynch has had a couple of great games this year. It’s Harvin’s turn. It’s Harvin’s time to shine.
