With the NFL‘s domestic abuse problems coming to light over the past few months, many have wondered how bad the issue really is. Sure, the public knows about a few major incidents, but how long have these incidents been going on? How long have they been flying under the radar?

Even worse — have teams been hiding the truth all along?

According to former Chicago Bears‘ GM Jerry Angelo, teams hid hundreds of domestic abuse incidents during his time in the league.

Here’s what Angelo told USA Today about team executives (himself included) looking the other way:

“I made a mistake. I was human. I was part of it. I’m not proud of it…We knew it was wrong. For whatever reason, it just kind of got glossed over. I’m no psychiatrist, so I can’t really get into what that part of it is. I’m just telling you how I was. I’ve got to look at myself first. And I was part of that, but I didn’t stand alone.”

He also said the typical evaluation process after learning of a domestic incident went something like this:

“OK, is everybody OK? Yeah. How are they doing? Good. And then we’d just move on. We’d move on.”

Angelo may have just opened Pandora’s box. But at the same time, he’s really just confirming what many people have thought all along.

Do we really want to know the truth at this point?
