Richard Sherman Is Due For An Interception In Week 6
People may look at Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman‘s 2014 statistics and think that he’s had a terrible year. What they would see is a mere 10 tackles, no interceptions, and one pass defended through four games, which is far below the numbers that he’s put up the past two and a half years.
Coming into this year, he had compiled 137 tackles, 20 interceptions, and 57 passes defended over that time period. So what’s so different about this year? Well, the major difference is the fact that the self-proclaimed “best corner in the game” hasn’t had many chances to make plays.
Opposing quarterbacks have only targeted the star cornerback 14 times this season, or just 3.5 targets per game. In those 14 targets, receivers have only caught half of them for 148 yards and one score, which is an 11.6 passer rating against. It’s evident that Sherman hasn’t had as bad of a year as the typical statistics may show. However, he’ll admit that he probably should have made a better play on a few of the balls thrown his way this year. And while he has yet to intercept a pass this season, that could change this week when the Dallas Cowboys come to town. There’s a couple reasons why that is the case.
First off, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stated on Friday that his team is going to challenge Sherman. While it’s likely that quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant will have some success going Sherman’s way, it’s only a matter of time before he makes a play and picks off a pass. Romo has been known to force some balls into his receivers at times, and if he does so against Sherman, he could pay the price. It’s simple math. The more chances Sherman gets, the more likely it is that he’ll make an interception.
Dallas also has sported one of the best – if not the best – rushing attack in the NFL behind the play of running back DeMarco Murray. Murray leads the league with 670 yards on the ground along with five touchdowns. Unfortunately, he’s also carried the ball way too much and it’s nearly impossible for the Cowboys to continue to give him the ball as much as they have. With 130 carries already this season, Murray is on pace to carry the ball 416 times, which is absurd. That means that in one of these games Dallas will have to limit his carries and lean on Romo to throw the ball. Again, the more chances Sherman gets, the more likely it is that he’ll make an interception.
Sherman should see more opportunities and targets this week. It’s about time he does something with them.
