Cleveland Browns Must Extend Brian Hoyer’s Contract Immediately

The Cleveland Browns may have finally found their quarterback of the future. No, it is not Johnny Manziel, the first-round draft pick with the jersey sales and endorsements. It is Brian Hoyer, the man who has led the team to an improbable 2-2 start. Unfortunately, Hoyer becomes a free agent at the end of the season, and eve more unfortunate is that the Browns have made no attempt at extending his contract.

Cleveland should have pulled the trigger on signing Hoyer to a reasonable deal prior to the season. Instead, they may have no choice but to give him a career-high contract extension. Talks ended before negotiations could get off the ground. One can only assume the reason was because the Browns were not prepared to pay Hoyer decent money, especially if the scenario of Manziel beating him in training camp for the starting job came to fruition.

If the Browns allow Hoyer to continue playing on his $1 million deal and enter the offseason as a free agent, they may severely regret it. There is nothing about the offense as far as personnel are considered that would make one assume they could put up solid numbers each week. With that said, Cleveland’s offense ranks fourth in rushing yards per game (143.5), 15th in passing yards per game (243.5) and 20th in points per game (25.8). There is no denying that a big reason for the success is due to Hoyer’s personal success and leadership under center.

There is nothing flashy about Hoyer’s numbers. He has only passed for 1,007 yards and six touchdowns in four games this season. At the same time, his efficiency has been outstanding. He has completed 62.1 percent of his passes, tossed only one interception and has recorded a 97.6 passer rating.

Manziel may be the guy the Browns hope will lead them to greatness one day down the road. Until then, Hoyer is clearly the person who is capable of giving Cleveland the best chance to win in the present and the immediate future. For that reason, allowing him to go unsigned in the offseason would be a massive mistake.
