The Denver Broncos have a new No. 1 running back and his name is Ronnie Hillman.

Many fantasy football owners were deathly afraid to pick up a Broncos RB since they had the 29th-ranked rushing offense in the NFL, with a paltry 79.5 rushing yards per game. However, the combination of Hillman and rookie RB Juwan Thompson proved to be too much against the New York Jets‘ sixth-ranked run defense this afternoon, and the Broncos should see a rise in their rankings pretty soon.

By halftime, Hillman already crossed the 50-yard rushing mark, but he failed to score a touchdown on multiple efforts from red zone territory in the first half. However, in the second half, the Broncos mixed up the running game a bit more, as Thompson saw a few more carries and racked up 38 rushing yards of his own to help keep Hillman fresh. With fresh legs, Hillman continued to run towards the coveted 100-yard mark, and by the game’s end, he finished with exactly 100 yards on the ground while tacking on three catches for 16 yards as well.

Last week, Peyton Manning gave Hillman a vote of confidence when he said that he was “counting on him”, and there’s no doubt that Hillman answered the call. With the dependable duo of Hillman and Thompson in the backfield, injured starting RB Montee Ball will have his work cut out for him when he returns to action in about four weeks time.

If Hillman keeps on performing like he did today, Denver could end the running back controversy that has loomed over their heads in the first quarter of the season.
