Buffalo Bills Rumors: Team Should Not Trade Mike Williams

The Buffalo Bills are 3-3 and remain in the hunt for first place in the AFC East. Even though Buffalo has played incredibly inconsistent at times this season, they have the benefit of being in a division in which every team has been a victim of inconsistency in 2014. At only one game back of the New England Patriots, it would make sense for the Bills to be advanced in trade talks to improve their football team. With that said, giving wide receiver Mike Williams the green light to seek a possible trade is not an ideal situation.

Buffalo acquired Williams in a trade in April. Clearly, the agreement of dealing for him knowing that his contract consists of $5.2 million guaranteed in 2015 has not worked in their favor.

The issue is Williams has been buried on a depth chart on a team that has seen poor play at the quarterback position, although Kyle Orton has been a breath of fresh air since taking over starting duties in Week 5. The team ranks 18th in the league in passing yards per game (226.0), while Williams has only hauled in eight of his 18 targets for 142 yards and a touchdown.

It is understandable why Williams wants to be traded. It is also makes sense why the Bills do not want to unless the right offer comes along.

“If he gets me compensation worthy of a No. 1 wide receiver which he claimed he is, then we would entertain (a trade offer),” general manager Doug Whalen said, according to NFL.com.

Other than getting rid of a disgruntled player who could become a parasite in the locker room, trading Williams does not help Buffalo in any way. There is no team entering Week 7 that will give a receiver who has been playing a minor role for weeks the time of day. More importantly, no team wants a player who is not a team player. Complaining about playing time and demanding a trade are not likeable qualities. If Buffalo cannot get quality in return, there is no reason to legitimately entertain an offer.

Williams being a healthy scratch in Week 6 certainly has to be frustrating for the former fourth-round draft pick who has never eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving in a season over the span of his four-year career. However, what Williams does not realize is that he could become a big part of the game plan in the ensuing weeks, especially if the Bills find themselves in playoff contention. Of course, the only way he becomes a part of the game plan is if he continues to be a team player, a line that is he definitely straddling at the moment.
