GM John Idzik Absolutely To Blame For New York Jets’ Woes

Make no mistake about it: John Idzik is the primary man to blame for this debacle of a season.

The New York Jets GM took the easy way out this past offseason when he sat on plenty of salary cap space instead of spending big on free agents. He took a rather inexpensive rout of “upgrading” the team, if you can even call it that, and ended up on the short end of the stick in the grand scheme of things.

It’s no secret that if a team wants to be competitive, it’s all about the talent across the roster. One needs to stock up on not only top athletes for starters, but also think about the quality of the overall depth behind them. When it comes to the NFL, injuries can happen out of nowhere and put a fork in most game plans. It’s always good to have a backup plan just in case anything like that happens — and Idzik wasn’t prepared.

He spent top dollar on Eric Decker, a glorified No. 2 receiving option at best, without acquiring anyone else to compliment him. Decker’s stats of course looked magical, but that’s because he played the past few seasons with a legendary quarterback in Peyton Manning.

Quarterback Geno Smith is nowhere near that talent level to help Decker, and the Jets have no backup who can come in to save the day behind center either. Michael Vick is just as bad, if not worse than Smith, so in essence, the Jets have to ride things out with him until the very end.

Idzik bragged about how running back Chris Johnson would be one of the best at his position this season. Not only is Johnson nowhere near his old self, but the Jets’ rushing attack is currently nonexistent. They don’t even run the football, yet think they will win games based on an offense that can’t score touchdowns through the air either.

Idzik’s biggest failure this season, however, was the fact that he did not manage to acquire a quality cornerback via either free agency or the 2014 NFL Draft. It’s embarrassing to say the least. If you thought the Jets’ defensive secondary issues were bad so far this season, just imagine what top offenses will do against it now with Dee Milliner out for a significant amount of time. Idzik neglected a huge weakness that will only get worse with every passing week.

With all eyes on head coach Rex Ryan in what will most likely be his last season coaching the Jets, Idzik will continue to hinder this team from making any serious attempts at the playoffs with his penny-pinching ways. As the Jets continue to keep losing games and with playoff hopes fading away faster than a New York minute, fans should see that there is only one man responsible here.
