Philadelphia Eagles Can Afford To Rest Darren Sproles

After rushing for 39 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries during Sunday night’s shutout win against the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles left the game late in the third quarter.

Head coach Chip Kelly revealed Monday afternoon that Sproles only suffered an MCL sprain and could miss just one or two weeks. Given that the Eagles have a bye this week, Sproles should be able to rest his knee and make a fully recovery.

The bye week will also provide some much-needed rest for some of the Eagles’ injured players, such as linebackers Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans, center Jason Kelce, left guard Evan Mathis and running back Chris Polk. With Polk practicing with a day-to-day hamstring injury, the Eagles likely won’t have to rush Sproles back from his injury.

Since the return of right tackle Lane Johnson, the Eagles’ offensive line play has been much improved and with that, LeSean McCoy appears to have returned to his 2013 form, rushing for 149 yards Sunday night on 6.8 yards per carry.

With the resurgence of McCoy, the improved offensive line play and the return of Polk, the Eagles’ offense should be able to survive without Sproles for a few weeks, or at least until he is fully healthy. McCoy carried the load last season splitting time with Polk, and there is no reason why the Eagles can’t do that again for one or maybe two games.

Sproles at age 31, is getting up there in age and while still explosive, is not the same player that he once was.  Rather than risking injury, the Eagles offense should sit Darren Sproles for at least a few weeks.
