Many players that make it to the NFL don’t take the easy road. St. Louis Rams‘ quarterback Austin Davis was teaching high school football a year ago and now he is the team’s starting quarterback. Davis has taken his opportunity as the team’s starter and has looked solid in his audition for a permanent role even though he couldn’t come away with a win in Week 6.
Fans may not be familiar with Davis and his background in football. The 25-year-old was signed by the Rams after going undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft. After being signed he was cut before the season started, joined with the Miami Dolphins and found his way back with the team in October of last year.
It’s a pretty crazy ride for the young gunslinger, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary for the life of an NFL player. Davis made his starting debut on Sept. 14 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and ever since he has been impressive, despite his up-and-down Week 6 performance against the San Francisco 49ers.
Davis was not afraid to attack a solid 49ers’ defense early on, he made many impressive throws, avoided blitzes and found his receivers open down field. When the second half began, the 49ers quarterback showed some signs of inexperience with some questionable throws but he’s still learning the game on the fly.
Overall, it was another good start that helped Davis’ cause in becoming the permanent starter for the Rams. In Week 3 and Week 5, Davis had over 320 yards passing yards and three touchdowns each in those games along with 40-plus passing attempts; he’s not afraid to throw the ball. Despite the Rams’ slow start to the season and its lack of weapons on offense, Davis has done his best with the pieces that he has been provided.
Davis broke almost all of the passing records at his college, Southern Mississippi, including Brett Favre‘s record for career passing yards. Sometimes a prestigious name and a high-draft choice doesn’t justify the talent of a player. From what I have seen, Davis has all of the makings of a starting quarterback in this league.
The Rams are a young team with a lot of promise for the future and Davis may be a part of its long-term success.
