Coming into the 2014 NFL season, the Baltimore Ravens‘ running game looked like a mess. Ray Rice was suspended indefinitely by the league, and the other options on Baltimore’s roster didn’t look promising. Something funny has happened so far this season; the Ravens’ rushing attack has been great, even better than it was with Rice, and it has a lot to do with the play of journeyman Justin Forsett.

Forsett is currently averaging 6.4 yards per carry, good for first in the NFL. He has gained 408 yards, which puts him at fifth in the league right now. Forsett has become a reliable playmaker for a Ravens squad that desperately needed him to step up, and he is enjoying a breakout season of sorts at age 29. Forsett has been so good this season in fact, that he could make a legitimate argument to be the NFL’s biggest surprise this season.

What sets Forsett apart from fellow running backs Bernard Pierce and Lorenzo Taliaferro isn’t just his running. Instead, it’s his impact in the passing game and willingness to do whatever the Ravens ask him that has made him such a valuable member of the offense. Forsett has become a slightly less-dynamic version of Darren Sproles, and the Ravens are making the most of him in a Sproles-type role.

Overall, Forsett enters Week 7 as the clear X-factor for the Ravens. If he can put up another 100-yard rushing effort like he did in Week 6, that would go a long way toward a Ravens victory.
