Bill Belichick Sending Darrelle Revis Home From Practice Won’t Matter

New England Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis overslept on Tuesday and missed the 7:30 a.m. ET meeting. According to The Boston Globe, Revis showed up to the Patriots facility late and Bill Belichick sent him home. The Boston Herald reported that after Revis overslept he was told to stay home rather than show up late. Either way this will not matter at all. Not even a little bit. Revis and Belichick will be just fine.

This is not the first time a member of the Patriots has been disciplined by Belichick for being late. Brandon Spikes was placed on season-ending IR by Belichick “partly because he was late for practice” prior to the Patriots matchup against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game. In 2009, the Hoodie sent Adalius Thomas, Randy Moss, Derrick Burgess and Gary Guyton home after they showed up late to the Patriots facility during a snowstorm.

Belichick sets rules and he doesn’t play favorites. If you break a rule you have to suffer the consequences, but at the end of the day, this is nothing. Revis was late so he was disciplined accordingly. The star cornerback went to the Patriots facility specifically to meet with Belichick privately and apologize in person. Revis appears to understand he made a mistake, accepted the discipline and is moving on; he was back in full pads at Wednesday’s practice.

Reportedly Revis will not miss any game time against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, which should make all Patriots fans feel relieved. The Patriots defense is ranked No. 1 against the pass, and Revis is a huge reason why. Although the Bears’ offense has struggled more than they should this season based on the talent they have on paper, they have some big and talented wide receivers for QB Jay Cutler to throw to. Alshon Jeffery is 6-foot-3, Brandon Marshall is 6-foot-4 and Martellus Bennett is 6-foot-6.

More than likely Revis will be matched up against Marshall for most of the day, and he needs to lock him down so the rest of the defense can concentrate on stopping run running back Matt Forte and the rest of Chicago’s offensive weapons. If Revis is going to stay on one side of the field, he needs to make sure the Bears cannot really operate on that side of the field and significantly shrink the space the Bears offense can utilize on Sunday.

Revis made a mistake and he learned from it. He’ll be back to making life difficult for opposing wide receivers come Sunday and everyone will forget he missed practice.
