Brian Urlacher’s Criticism of Jay Cutler Is Unfair

Once again, former Chicago Bears great Brian Urlacher is running his mouth about his former team. He’s beginning to sound like a broken record and someone who is bitter his former team cut his career short by not offering him a multi-year deal a couple years ago.

During a radio interview on Wednesday, Urlacher lashed out at former teammate and current Bears quarterback, who was recently deemed “elite” by Chicago GM Phil Emery.

“Financially, he is one of the elite guys in the NFL. … He just hasn’t produced like an elite quarterback,” Urlacher said.

Are Urlacher’s criticisms of Cutler accurate? Yes, they are. It’s becoming evident that Cutler can’t win big games for the Bears and perhaps he never will. This isn’t to say Urlacher is wrong in his opinion. However, his decision to criticize his former teammate publicly is another poor choice.

At this point, anyone who’s been around the Bears for long knows these comments are partially fueled by bad blood toward the franchise as a whole. He loves his former teammates on defense, most of whom have moved on from the team by now, but anyone he didn’t grow with as a Bear he despises.

If Urlacher were a regular analyst and was asked point blank about this issue and gave his honest answer, that would be one thing. However, he’s picking and choosing who and what to criticize and it always has to do with the Bears. Despite the fact he was one of the best linebackers in team history, his opinion on every issue shouldn’t be of utmost importance.

Nobody ever hears Urlacher sounding off about anything else in the NFL other than the Bears, which means he’s not acting as an NFL analyst who happened to be critiquing the Bears.

Once again, Urlacher felt the need to get back at his former team by criticizing their quarterback and quite frankly, he’s getting pretty annoying. Although he certainly won’t, Urlacher should keep his mouth shut when it comes to anything concerning the Bears from here on out.
