Cincinnati Bengals Need to Trade for Ndamukong Suh

Ndamukong Suh could save the Cincinnati Bengals' Season

The NFL’s trading deadline is quickly approaching, and as many of you may know, there have been talks about a potential trade sending Ndamukong Suh from the Detroit Lions to the Cincinnati Bengals. This would send rookie cornerback, Darqueze Dennard to the Lions, along with a second-round draft pick. I will tell you why the Bengals should do everything in their power to make this trade happen.

I think we can all agree that the Bengals have made huge strides over the past few seasons to become one of the most talented teams in the NFL, making it to three straight postseasons. The problem is, they are 0-3 in those playoff games. In fact, they haven’t won a playoff game in 24 years! They need to somehow find a way to fix this, and I think Suh could be the answer they’ve been looking for.

The Bengals’ offense, when healthy, is one of the best in the NFL. Their main struggles seem to be on the defensive end. They currently sit at 30th in the league in rushing defense, allowing a dismal 146.3 yards per game, and about five yards per carry. They’ve also allowed an average of 416.7 total yards per game, which is good for 31st in the league. This is just not the type of performance that will help the Bengals win a championship anytime soon. Suh is arguably the best defensive tackle in football. He is a game changer, and could be exactly what this Cincinnati defense needs to get back on track this season and make a playoff run. He could essentially save their season.

Now, I know a lot of you may be wondering if the Bengals can really afford a top-ranked player like Suh. Well the answer is, yes they can!  He is currently in the final year of his contract with the Lions, with a base salary of $12.5 million. If the Bengals were to attain him in this trade, they would only be responsible for a fraction of that of that, a total of $7.4 million for the remainder of the season. The Bengals have the salary cap room to easily afford this if they feel he is worth it, and in my mind, I don’t think there’s any question that he is. In regards to the character issues he’s had in the past, this could be great for him, as he would be entering a positive environment with the Bengals.  This is a stand-up organization with locker room unity and I firmly believe Suh could benefit from this just as much as the Bengals can benefit from his talent.
