Drew Brees Proves New Orleans Saints Are Still Contenders

Coming into Sunday night’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers, the New Orleans Saints were on the verge of surrendering their status as annual contenders. However, Drew Brees wasn’t interested in doing so.

Connecting on 27 of his 32 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns, Brees shredded the Packers’ secondary. Throughout the game, the Saints’ gunslinger routinely tossed perfect throws under pressure, and kept drives alive with precision passing. While his counterpart Aaron Rodgers was hobbled by a hamstring injury, Brees was cruising.

Considering the Saints came into the game at 2-4 while the Packers held a 5-2 mark, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Green Bay would come away victorious. New Orleans had been struggling all season to move the ball, and its secondary was displaying pitiful pass coverage. Well, a different team showed up on Sunday night. Not only did they come away with a win, but it was a commanding victory that showed just what the Saints are capable of.

On top of Brees’ excellent showing, the Saints watched rookie receiver Brandin Cooks have a breakout performance. The Oregon State product hauled in six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown, while also adding a rushing touchdown on an end around. Fantasy owners were certainly happy with the sparkplug’s production.

Improving to 3-4, the Saints now share the lead in the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers, who have also had their fair share of struggles this season. If the Saints can continue to pick up the pace and play like the team that’s made the playoffs in four of the last five seasons, they’ll be well on their way to a divisional crown and a spot in the playoffs.

Brees looked like the All Pro quarterback New Orleans has come to love on Sunday night. Expect to see more of this level of play moving forward.
