The Miami Dolphins are sitting at 4-3 and are right in the thick of the race for the AFC East crown, but how does the team really stack up in each facet of the game?

Miami’s offense has been brilliant at times and inept at others, leaving fans wondering which team is going to take the field each week. The running game has been solid, however, ranking 6th in the league, and has opened up opportunities for Ryan Tannehill on intermediate routes and in play-action. If the Dolphins could play with some sort of consistency, this grade would be better.

The 3rd ranked passing defense in the NFL is anchored by defensive ends Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon, who are having Pro Bowl caliber seasons, and the secondary has held its own against some of the best quarterbacks in the league. Even with a number of injuries and suspensions, the unit has performed well, and seems to be improving week by week.

A few weeks ago, this grade would have been much worse, but Joe Philbin, Bill Lazor and Kevin Coyle seem to have turned a corner after the last second loss to Green Bay. Still, it would be imprudent to overlook the bungling of the quarterback situation prior to the Oakland Raiders game, and the late game blunders that doomed the Dolphins against the Green Bay Packers.

Jarvis Landry has been more than a pleasant surprise, as he has skyrocketed up the depth chart and joined first round selection Ja’Wuan James as an offensive starter. Even 7th Round selection Terrence Fede has made his way on to the field at the team’s deepest position. So far, this has proven to be the best Dolphins draft in recent memory.

Brandon Fields and Caleb Sturgis have had below subpar seasons so far, making the field position battle that much harder to win. At the same time, Jarvis Landry has been excellent on kick returns, but it is hard to overlook the negatives of the special teams units as a whole.
