No Cause For Celebration For Chicago Bears’ DE Lamarr Houston

It’s bad enough that the Chicago Bears suffered their worst defeat of the season at the hands of the New England Patriots in Week 8. But to make matters worse, the Bears will be without defensive end Lamarr Houston for the remainder of the year.

With Chicago already trailing New England by 25 points with a little more than three minutes left in the game, Houston had an uncontested sack on Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Immediately after the take down, Houston felt the need to celebrate, as if the Bears’ lone sack of the day was going to put them in position to make an unforeseen comeback. As a result, Houston tore the ACL in his right knee.

Houston’s torn ACL will require reconstructive surgery and several months of therapy. Had this injury happened during a more significant time of the game against the Patriots (and not while celebrating), then this bad news would be much easier to accept by the Bears’ organization and fans. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.

This unnecessary display of happiness made most of Jay Cutler’s bonehead interceptions from this season seem like not that big of a deal. Personally, I don’t wish any type of injury upon anyone, but a small part of me has no remorse for such stupidity. It wasn’t too long ago that Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch tore his ACL doing the same exact thing. You would think that players would learn from their peers’ mistakes. Now, not only will Houston have to sit out the remainder of the season, but he will also have to be the butt of many jokes, and be compared to other idiots like Tulloch and former NFL kicker Bill Gramatica.

Houston has apologized to the Bears’ organization for this injury that could have totally been avoided. That’s the least he can do after he was given a five-year, $35 million contract with $15 million guaranteed. Now it’s looking like that the fifth-year veteran’s contract could be going to waste.
