It is practically an insult to the fans of the New York Jets to have Rex Ryan still at the helm after the dismal first half of the 2014 NFL season. It makes many question why owner Woody Johnson decided to keep Ryan on board after the Jets won their final regular season game in 2013. At this point, Ryan has nowhere to hide as the New York Post used the back cover of Monday’s newspaper to demand Johnson fire the head coach.

The unfortunate part about it is Ryan does not deserve the entirety of the blame for New York’s 1-7 record. In fact, general manager John Idzik is just as much, if not more, to blame for the sorry excuse for a NFL roster.
Geno Smith is not a professional quarterback, at least not at this point in his career. And, thinking Michael Vick actually cares to do anything besides hold a clipboard, enjoy the bench and collect a paycheck is ridiculous. The passing offense is about as embarrassing as it gets, and the defense simply does not have the classic Ryan fire that it has in years past.
The only positive about the season is the run offense and run defense is actually respectable, but just because a team can have success in the run game does not automatically transition to wins. The defensive front also deserves some credit, which is certainly a direct result of Ryan’s coaching. It is that reason that Johnson may be struggling with his decision about Ryan’s future.
The reality is anytime a team plays as bad as the Jets have, the blame has to fall somewhere. In my opinion, Ryan and Idzik both deserve to be gone.
