Houston Texans' 2014 Midseason Report Card

As we stare down the midway point of the 2014 NFL season, it's safe to say the Houston Texans have played pretty well so far. Despite a 4-4 record, Houston is still in a good spot to make a possible playoff run down the stretch. Here is my midseason report card for the Texans.

Texans kick returner Damaris Johnson is ranked 19th in the league in average kick return yardage. Kicker Randy Bullock has made 15 field goals this season with an 88 percent conversion rate. Punter Shane Lechler has an average punt distance of 47.6 yards, which ranks him second in the NFL.

Grade: B

4. Rookies

First overall pick Jadeveon Clowney has almost done nothing this season while missing almost every game after undergoing knee surgery following Week 1. Running back Alfred Blue has looked pretty good in place of Arian Foster at times.

So far, I would have to give their rookies a grade of incomplete. We haven't seen enough yet to give them a proper grade.

3. Coaching

Texans first-year head coach Bill O'Brien has been great. I really don't believe this team would be 4-4 without him. They still don't have a franchise quarterback and you could say he's done well with what he has to work with on his roster.

Grade: A+

2. Defense

Houston's defense is ranked 23rd overall in the NFL. If it wasn't for J.J. Watt, things would be a lot worse.

Grade: C+

The Texans' offense ranks 17th in the league with journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. They rank 26th in passing and fifth in rushing so far.

Grade: C+
