Don’t look now, but the Killer B’s have returned to Pittsburgh. In the early 90s, it was the Pittsburgh Pirates who featured the Killer B’s with Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Jay Bell and company. The Pirates went to three straight National League Championship Series and were the talk of the town. Now it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ turn to brag about their Killer B’s. The Steelers went a step further and even looked like killer bees on the field, wearing their throwback jerseys in Week 8 that are affectionately known as the “bumblebee” jerseys.

In all seriousness, Pittsburgh needs to resurrect the Killer B’s slogan for this dynamic group of players because they are “killing it” on the field. The Steelers put up 51 points on a stingy Indianapolis Colts defense that was coming off of a shutout of the Cincinnati Bengals. The Steelers have scored 81 points in their past two games and it appears the offense is finally in full swing.

Without further ado, here are the members of the new Killer B’s in Pittsburgh:

Ben Roethlisberger is riding high after becoming the first quarterback in the NFL with two 500-yard passing games in his career. He set franchise records for yards (523) and touchdowns (6). He was only some 30 yards from breaking the all-time passing yards record set by Norm Van Brocklin in 1951. The Hall of Fame Los Angeles Ram threw for 554 yards, just 31 better than Big Ben. Roethlisberger also joined an elite group (Joe Montana, Tom Brady and Terry Bradshaw) by collecting 100 wins in his first 150 games. Big Ben leads the new Killer B’s attack having thrown for nearly 2,400 yards in eight games, with 16 TDS and a 68.4 completion percentage.

Antonio Brown has turned into one of the NFL’s elite receivers. He does it all: short passes, screens, the deep ball and clutch end zone grabs. Brown has caught 60 balls at the halfway point with 852 yards and seven touchdowns. Heck, he’s so good he even threw a touchdown pass to Lance Moore in Week 7’s win over the Houston Texans. Brown is hard to stop and is on pace to have a 1,600-yard season. In four and a half seasons with the Steelers, Brown has more than 4,400 yards and 22 touchdown catches.

Le’Veon Bell is one of the most dynamic running backs in football. He has compiled 691 rushing yards and one touchdown. He is even more dynamic in the passing game, with 42 receptions for 395 yards and a touchdown. Bell is fast and strong, giving him a big edge when he gets into the secondary. He also is patient and can explode through a hole at the line of scrimmage. This second-year running back out of Michigan State is ready to become an NFL superstar.

Martavis Bryant has burst onto the scene for the Steelers. In just two games the rookie from Clemson has caught seven passes for 123 yards, three of which have gone for touchdowns. The sky is the limit for this fourth-round pick who has plenty of size (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) and above average speed (4.42 40-yard dash). He has become a favorite target of Roethlisberger because he can out-jump defenders in the red zone and out-run defenders on the deep ball.

It’s time for the Killer B’s to live again in Pittsburgh. Long gone are the days of Bonds and Bonilla hitting home runs and stealing bases at Three Rivers Stadium. The new generation of Killer B’s has taken over Heinz Field and they are poised to give Pittsburgh sports fans something to cheer about. You could say they are creating a “buzz” about Steelers football again, as the team is now back in the discussion as a contender.  The city should fully capitalize on this chance to bring back the  Killer B’s mantra.
