The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are off to a very mediocre 4-3 start to the 2014 season. There have been games where the Seahawks look like one of the best teams in the NFL, and other games, particularly lately, where they don't even look like a playoff team. Seattle has two games coming up at home where they will try to right the ship. Here is their midseason report card.

There's one word that describes the Seahawks' offense: inconsistent. Quarterback Russell Wilson is developing into one of the elite players at his position, but his team has struggled with some identity issues. The recent trade of Percy Harvin takes a dynamic threat from this offense, but it has helped Seattle get back to pounding the running game with Marshawn Lynch. This group should improve over the coming weeks.

Seattle's 2013 defense was one of the best defenses in history and was the major reason why they won the Super Bowl in February. Unfortunately, this year's defense has struggled to replicate that kind of success. The combination of departed free agents and injuries has impacted the depth of the Seahawks' secondary and front seven, and it's showed with their play on the field. That being said, they're still a top 10 defense.

One of the reasons that the Seahawks have not gotten off to a great start is because of the lack of adjustments during games. Darrell Bevell's play-calling on offense has been suspect at times. Dan Quinn hasn't dialed up blitzes to get pressure on the quarterback. A base defense is the philosophy of Pete Carroll's regime, but this year's team is not as deep and creative disguises are necessary for them to succeed.

While it took them a few games to make an impact, Seattle's rookies have begun to see regular playing time. Justin Britt has been starting at right tackle all season. Wide receivers Paul Richardson and Kevin Norwood have caught passes the past two games and look like capable starters. Linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis has entered the rotation and made some nice plays in Sunday's win. This group will continue to trend upward.

The best part of the Seahawks this year has been special teams. Punter Jon Ryan and kicker Steven Hauschka are two of the very best in the NFL. Pete Carroll praises special teams, so it's not surprising that the Seahawks usually win this phase of the game. However, Seattle lost in Week 7 against the St. Louis Rams because of their special teams play, otherwise the grade would be higher.
