If the New York Giants are going to have any shot at breaking their recent two-game losing streak, they’re going to need rookie running back Andre Williams to step up and have a big game against the Indianapolis Colts this coming Monday night, with veteran Rashad Jennings likely out for at least another week.
Not only does Williams need to step up, but he’s going to need some help from New York’s offensive line as well.
While the Giants haven’t rushed for a lot of yards during each of their three wins, they were able to establish enough of a running game that opposing defenses were forced to move up, which opened things up for quarterback Eli Manning and their passing game.
While the Giants’ offensive line doesn’t seem to be run blocking as well as of late, Williams could do a better job cutting back and hitting the open hole, rather than the one he was assigned to go through, which ends up getting clogged up.
The great thing about the way Williams plays is that he does a great job pushing forward and getting an extra two or three yards after contact. He’s a very physical runner that seems to enjoy punishing opposing defenses.
The is really a game in which Williams should have success. The Colts have the 26th ranked run defense in the NFL. And they’ve given up at least 100 yards rushing in four of the eight games they’ve played this season.
The Giants will ultimately need Williams to run the ball well to take some pressure off their offensive line during passing situations.
