Chicago Bears' 2014 Midseason Report Card

It’s been a rough eight games for the Chicago Bears. Heading into the bye week with a 3-5 record wasn’t the game plan at the start of the season. Here’s how the midseason report card breaks down.

Surprisingly, the one sure thing for the Bears has failed. The offense was supposed to be the high-flying powerhouse leading the league in scoring and winning high-scoring shootouts. The reality is that they are ranked 14th according to total yards, and 13th in scoring.

Even with the rebuilt defensive line, consensus was that the defense would still be the weak link in 2014. The additions of Jared Allen and Lamar Houston have not made an impact, but the pickup of Willie Young has been a plus, as has been the play of Jeremiah Ratliff in the middle. There is still a void in the secondary and the defense ranks 30th in points allowed.

With Devin Hester in Atlanta, the special teams of the Bears have struggled. Santonio Holmes has provided little boost, and their combined kickoff and punt return units rank 25th in the league. The addition of rookie punter Pat O’Donnell has done little to resurrect the punt unit, which ranks 27th. Robbie Gould remains solid and saves them from failing.

The coaching staff sits at the center of all blame for the lackluster performances of the team. Marc Trestman isn’t showing any signs of being able to rally the troops or keep them focused now that things are looking bleak. Mel Tucker is on the hot seat and should not make it through the season as leader of the defense.

The one bright spot for the Bears is the performance of their 2014 draft picks, namely Kyle Fuller at cornerback. Having to step in as a full-time starter when Charles Tillman was lost to injury, he’s already flashed signs of greatness. Defensive tackles Will Sutton and Ego Ferguson have seen decent playing time and have stepped up with solid performances.
