The St. Louis Rams haven’t had a winning season since 2003, when they went 12-4. They did go 8-8 in 2004 and 2006 and won a playoff game in 2004, but it’s been a pretty dreadful 11-year stretch.

The Rams have some good young talent in rookie quarterback Austin Davis (1,680 yards, 10 TDs, five INTs), rookie running back Tre Mason (30 carries, 157 yards, one TD), and second-year wide receivers Brian Quick (375 yards, three TDs) and Tavon Austin (123 yards receiving, 65 rushing yards, 102 return yards).

The defense also has some young talent, including rookie defensive lineman Aaron Donald (18 tackles, two sacks). Despite the talent, the Rams are heading towards another losing season.

The Rams are 2-5 so far this year, averaging just 19 points per game while giving up 30 points per game. To make things worse, the Rams lost left tackle Jake Long (torn ACL) and wide receiver Brian Quick (torn rotator cuff) for the season. Both were injured in Week 8’s embarrassing 34-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The high point of the season was the Rams’ upset win over the Seattle Seahawks 28-26 in Week 7, which included the Rams using a big fake on a punt return that sprung Stedman Bailey for a 90-yard touchdown. However, there have been many low points. Of those, blowing a big lead against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3 and not pulling off a big comeback in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles probably hurt the most.

The future is bright for the Rams without Sam Bradford, but the 2014 season won’t be too pleasant for them in the second half. Expect the Rams to keep losing games, especially with the losses of Long and Quick.

Midseason Grade: D
