The Kansas City Chiefs gained a lot of momentum in Week 8 after trouncing the St. Louis Rams. They will look to build on that this week when they play one of the worst teams in the NFL, the New York Jets. And if the Chiefs want to win again this week, they will need to rely on Travis Kelce.
Kelce, the team’s starting tight end, has been a nice addition to the Kansas City offense this season. He is an athletic tight end leading the position in yards after catch who makes some spectacular plays every game. This is because QB Alex Smith targets him multiple times a game and Kelce has had at least three catches in every game except for one. The two have built some nice chemistry together which gives him the opportunity to make plays every week. And he should make many plays in Week 9.
Kelce should have a dominant game this week against a poor Jets secondary. The Jets have surrendered the most touchdowns to tight ends in the entire NFL, allowing nine scores to the position in the past six weeks. And this is with traditional tight ends that safeties and linebackers should be able to cover. Complicating this for the Jets is the fact that Kelce is an athletic tight end who may need a faster player to cover him. And if the Jets can’t cover traditional tight ends, they could have an even bigger problem covering Kelce. That just means an even bigger game for him than usual.
Everything seems prime for Kelce to have an explosive game this week. He gets targets and opportunities to make plays on offense, and he is facing a very poor secondary that is especially poor at covering tight ends. So if the Chiefs want to continue their dominance in Week 9 against the Jets, Kelce will have to be a big part of the offensive attack and that makes him the x-factor for the team this week.
