Predicting the Final Score of Redskins vs. Vikings

Redskins vs. Vikings Prediction

Brace Hemmelgarn – USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins travel to Minneapolis this week to take on the Minnesota Vikings in a matchup between two 3-5 teams. Both teams are in need of a win to stay relevant in the NFL playoff discussion, and both are equally capable of getting this victory in what I feel will be a very evenly matched game.

First of all, it was just recently announced that Robert Griffin III will be back from injury and starting at quarterback in this game. This is huge news for a Redskins team that has not been able to establish consistency at the QB position since losing RG3 to an ankle injury in Week 2. They are hoping that his return will light a fire under the team and lead them to a successful second half of the season.

The Redskins are coming off a huge division win over the Dallas Cowboys Monday night and are looking to keep this momentum going. Colt McCoy stepped in at QB in place of Kirk Cousins and didn’t have a spectacular game, but he did enough to lead his team to victory. Their defense came together and played quite possibly their best game of the season, recording five sacks and two turnovers against the Cowboys.

The Vikings are also coming off a nice road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. This ended in a walk-off 27-yard fumble return for a touchdown in overtime by rookie LB Anthony Barr. The Vikings’ defense is playing extremely well and is currently ranked fourth in the NFL against the pass. This should prove interesting as they face a quarterback who hasn’t played in six weeks.

On the offensive side of the ball, all eyes will be on rookie RB Jerick McKinnon who is proving to be a rising star in Minnesota. He is first among all rookies in rushing and currently stands at fourth in the NFL averaging 5.15 yards per carry. With the passing game struggling, it may just be up to McKinnon to carry this Vikings offense.

After starting the season 1-5, the Redskins have won their last two contests and will look to keep that momentum going. They will look to RGIII to pick up where McCoy left off last week and carry this seventh-ranked offense on his shoulders. On the defensive end, keep an eye on LB Ryan Kerrigan who is currently fourth in the league with 7.5 sacks on the season.

The matchup of the game for me will be Griffen vs. Griffin. That is, Vikings DE Everson Griffen vs. Redskins QB Robert Griffin III. Griffen is third in the league with eight sacks on the season and will look to put pressure on RG3, who may be a bit rusty coming back from that ankle injury. That will definitely be something to keep an eye on in this game.

Final Prediction: Minnesota’s defense will thrive in this matchup. The Vikings will beat the Redskins in a close one, 16-13.
