Not Everyone in Redskins Organization Agrees With Robert Griffin III Return

For the most part, people are thrilled with the Washington Redskins making the decision to allow quarterback Robert Griffin III to return to the lineup against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9. Of course, there are plenty of doubters, with the locker room definitely being divided about the ruling to bring him back at this point in time.

“There are some players (in the Redskins locker room) who didn’t know about the decision, or who didn’t approve of the decision,” ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said Sunday morning on SportsCenter. “Now this week there were several members of the Redskins organization who said that they believed that this was a decision that was owner and general manager-driven, and it didn’t come from the Redskins head coach Jay Gruden.

“I reached out to Redskins executive Tony Wyllie last night. He said that is absolutely not true, that the Redskins head coach made the decision. Another Redskins executive said it’s laughable.

“But there are several members of that organization who do believe that this decision came from the owner and the general manager, but didn’t come from the head coach.”

It is nearly impossible to know which side is telling the truth. The executives are going to cover themselves and say it is a coach decision to start Griffin, which it absolutely should be. However, the fact that several members within the organization are telling a different story is certainly intriguing.

Despite backup quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy showing promise in Griffin’s absence, Griffin is still the franchise signal caller. Nothing will change that, at least not right now. Of course, it could change in the near future if he is unable to get the job done as far as wins are concerned. For now, the Redskins believe he is their best chance at reaching the game’s ultimate prize.

The bigger issue is the possible rift between coach Gruden and the executive team. If coaching decisions are being made by higher ups, that is a very big deal. For the sake of the Redskins, hopefully there is no truth to the media report, especially since Gruden is only in his first year as the head coach and needs to main control of what happens inside the locker room.
