Seriously outmanned and heavy underdogs, things didn’t look promising for the St. Louis Rams against the San Francisco 49ers entering Week 9 on the road. Jeff Fisher’s feisty team wasn't going to just roll over and play dead, though, as they fought to the bitter end and upended the vulnerable Niners 13-10. Here are the five biggest takeaways from the Rams’ improbable victory against their NFC West rivals.

Robert Quinn finished with 19 sacks in 2013, but the fierce pass-rusher hasn’t been producing the same numbers this season. That changed in Week 9 against the Niners, as Quinn put up two individually and the Rams notched eight sacks as a team. Colin Kaepernick was under siege all afternoon, and it showed in his lackluster final stat line. Quinn also forced a fumble which proves he is regaining his form from a year ago down the stretch.

Sure, the AFC North has every team above .500, but the NFC West is the NFL’s version of the SEC. Any team can beat any opponent on any given Sunday, and the Rams proved that this week. They should have pulled the upset of the Cowboys back in Week 3 after blowing a 21-0 lead, and they had the Eagles on the ropes with a fourth-quarter comeback in Week 5. There’s no doubt this is the league’s toughest division from top to bottom.

Brett Favre may be a fan of Austin Davis, but his Southern Mississippi bias is showing in that assessment. Davis threw two picks and barely reached 100 yards passing on the day, but he managed to pull out the win regardless. While his story is terrific and his record as a starter is better than Sam Bradford’s in terms of win percentage (.375 to .429), Davis isn’t going to be the next Kurt Warner just yet.

Last season began with Daryl Richardson as the starter for the Rams, and Zac Stacy took over with authority once he flamed out. That led many to believe he was the next workhorse back in St. Louis, but Tre Mason has pilfered the job from him early in his NFL career. Gaining 65 yards on 19 carries isn’t legendary by any means, but this kid is proving to be a reliable, productive ball-carrier for the Rams this season.

Is it just me, or does Jeff Fisher seem to be turning into the next Tom Coughlin? Just when you write him off and say he’s going to be fired, his coaching prowess shows up again to inspire the team on an unexpected winning streak. Fisher’s Rams have dealt with numerous injuries this season but keep fighting to win each and every week. Don’t be surprised if they battle to the end and wind up around .500 to earn Fisher some hardware.
