In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Adrian Peterson has put together a plea bargain that will allow him to avoid jail time for felony child abuse charges.

Instead, the Minnesota Vikings running back will plead no contest to misdemeanor reckless assault, which will not include any reference to family violence or violence against a minor. The count reportedly carries a $2,000 fine, probation and 80 hours of community service. That’s obviously a much more lenient punishment than the potential jail time he was facing with the felony charges.

Assuming the judge accepts this plea, the bigger question becomes how the NFL will decide to punish Peterson. He’s already missed eight games while on an indefinite suspension, and could be forced to miss more time if the league sees it fit.

Based on what happens during today’s hearing, expect the NFL to move quickly to determine what the next move is for Peterson. If he is cleared to play, expect him to be available for the Vikings’ Week 11 showdown with the Chicago Bears – and for public outcry to ensue.

More to come as the situation unfolds.
