The Baltimore Ravens have finally taken action to strengthen the secondary, which has been the weakest unit on either side of the ball. Cornerback Chykie Brown was cut and rookie Tramain Jacobs was called up from the practice squad.
In the first game of the season, Brown was beaten by A.J. Green for a game-winning 77-yard touchdown. Many gave Brown the benefit of the doubt on the play while questioning why he was assigned Green with the game on the line in the first place. However, Brown has performed poorly all year, and giving up another long touchdown to Antonio Brown in Week 9 was the last straw.
Is a rookie who was acquired as an undrafted free agent the answer to the secondary’s problems? Probably not. The point is that the Ravens are trying to figure it out. They took some heat for not pursuing a new cornerback before the trade deadline and now they’re making a change.
If Jacobs, a Texas A&M product, isn’t ready and falls flat on his face, that’s okay. Brown has proven to be incapable of covering a wide receiver in this league since he was drafted in 2011. The safeties are still a mess, but playing behind a player as incompetent as Brown just magnifies that issue.
Jacobs will have the opportunity to acclimate himself to the NFL when the Ravens take on a mediocre Tennessee Titans passing attack led by Zach Mettenberger. Baltimore will then enter their bye week with hopes of Jimmy Smith’s return in Week 12, when they travel to the Superdome to take on the New Orleans Saints.
If nothing else, this move won’t make the Ravens any worse. The secondary couldn’t getting any worse, and it’s worth plugging in a rookie who is trying to prove his value to see if they can catch lightning in a bottle. It’s much easier to try to figure things out against a Mettenberger-led offense than against Drew Brees or Philip Rivers later in the season.
