Predicting How The Detroit Lions Will Finish In 2014

The Detroit Lions have had one of their better starts, but most football fans know how a lot of their good starts end. Last season, the Lions started the season at 6-3, before falling to 1-7 during their last eight contests. That is not exactly the type of history that the Lions want to be known for, so 2014 has to be different for them.

Predicting how they will finish the season is no easy task, because not many teams are as unpredictable as the Lions. This season does look promising for the Lions, but their schedule is only getting tougher. Let’s take a look at how the Lions may finish the 2014 NFL season.

The Miami Dolphins are playing some of their best football of late. Lions fans would be smart to not sleep on the Dolphins. They have a dangerous offense when Ryan Tannehill plays well, and their defense is underrated. That being said, the Lions should be able to shut the Dolphins down fairly easily at Ford Field. The Lions are coming back healthy, and they are going to want to make a statement coming off of their bye week. I think the Lions will beat the Dolphins.

The next two games are going to be tough for the Lions. They go on the road to face the NFC best Arizona Cardinals and then follow up on the road against the powerful offense of the New England Patriots. While both games are winnable for the Lions and their top-ranked defense, I feel that they will lose both of these games.

The Lions will have three very winnable home games after they complete their short road trip. They play the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then the Minnesota Vikings. All three of these games should end up being wins for the Lions. The Bears always struggle in Detroit, and Thanksgiving Day will have the Lions pumped up. The Buccaneers always play good football against the Lions, but Detroit should be able to stop Tampa’s offense in their tracks. The Vikings are going to be the toughest game in this stretch, but their lack of offense spells trouble for them heading into Ford Field.

Finally, the Lions will play two very important games on the road. They play the Bears in Chicago, and I think that the Bears will be out for revenge against the Lions. Although they have struggled at home, the Bears should be able to get their offense going if Jay Cutler doesn’t take too many hits. Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery will all help Cutler lead the Bears to a victory at home against the Lions.

The last game of the season is going to be the most important for the Lions and the Green Bay Packers. The Lions head to Lambeau Field to take on the Packers in what could be a game that decides the NFC North winner. The Lions have not won at Lambeau Field since 1991, but all streaks must come to an end. I feel that the Lions sweep the Packers and win their first division title since 1993.

If my predictions hold true, then the Lions will be a force in the playoffs. If  the Lions finish 11-5, then they will have a home playoff game with a great chance to make it past the first round. Only time will tell, but the Lions could win their first division title in a very long time.
