Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III has been surrounded by rumors this year about losing the locker room, and it does not bode well that his head coach is also showing signs of uncertainty. Jay Gruden recently made comments about using the rest of this season to “find out” whether their quarterback is a franchise player, and those words are not exactly a ringing endorsement.

“I understand everybody has a criticism,” Griffin said to ESPN on Monday. “But you have to prove yourself every day in this league. I take that mindset toward it, but when it comes to being the franchise guy, I believe that I am. I believe this organization knows that I am and I know those guys in the locker room believe that I am. I don’t ever step onto the field trying to make a claim saying, ‘I’m the guy.’ No, it’s not like that.”

We all know where owner Daniel Snyder falls on this debate, but that is the problem. It always looks like D.C.’s ownership is not in great communication with the coaching staff, and they will never be a consistent contender until that situation is resolved. They also need to figure out who their long-term solution is at quarterback.

Griffin’s rookie season was truly historic, but at some point, the Redskins need to examine what he will be capable of in the future. He has barely played after dislocating his ankle early this season, and you could argue he cost Washington any chance of making the playoffs with his performance last Sunday. Tying the franchise to his future health just seems to be a dicey proposition.
