Struggling New York Giants Receiving Corps Legion of Boom Bound

Just when they thought it couldn’t get any worse, the New York Giants will have to try and win for the first time in a month on the road against the defending Super Bowl champions. With their offense stalling as of late, they will be tested even harder going up against the vaunted Seattle Seahawks defense.

There have been some clever nicknames given to different NFL defenses over the years, such as the Orange Crush (Denver Broncos), Purple People Eaters (Minnesota Vikings), the Steel Curtain (Pittsburgh Steelers), New York Sack Exchange (New York Jets) and the Doomsday Defense (Dallas Cowboys).

The front four of the team were the main focus of these colorful monikers, but in the case of the Seahawks, it is their secondary – and only the secondary – that has earned the right to be called the Legion of Boom.

Cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Byron Maxwell are joined by safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor in the starting lineup, and have been wreaking havoc as a unit since 2012.Odell Beckham Jr. is not shying away from the difficult assignment he is to face on Sunday, but rather embracing it.

“It’s definitely a challenge,” the rookie wide receiver said. “They’re a great defense and have been [one] for a while. It is nothing that you’re not willing to face. These are the games you live to play for, the moments you live to play for, to go against the best of the best, to go against Richard Sherman, the Seattle Seahawks and the L.O.B.. Why not embrace the opportunity?”

Besides sheer talent and athleticism, the Seahawks have another thing going for them, and that is a complicated and effective defensive game plan. With a strong line, they do not need to blitz as much to put pressure on the quarterback and can mix up their personnel in coverage assignments.

The Giants (3-5) will have to not only deal with the Seattle defense, but also their offense with quarterback Russell Wilson and running back Marshawn Lynch, as well as the ‘12th man.’ No team in the league enjoys a better home field advantage than the 5-3 Seahawks.

They did lose at CenturyLink Field in Week 6 to the Cowboys, so they are fallible. If the Giants are to get the job done under these circumstances, they will have to move the ball through the air, and that means to do it against the Seahawks’ secondary.
