Arizona Cardinals Rumors: Contract Extension Coming For Carson Palmer?

Many football analysts had the Arizona Cardinals as a fringe playoff team this season. Very few of them had the Cardinals in sole possession of first place in the NFC West heading into Week 10. Carson Palmer is no doubt one of the main reasons why the team is in the position it is.

Beyond this season, Palmer’s status is up in the air. His contract runs through 2015, but it also voids five days after the Super Bowl this coming February. Yes, a fairly odd structuring. But given the way he’s played on the field, and the fact that he’s played through a nerve problem in his shoulder, you have to believe he’ll be in talks for a new contract down the road before he hits the open market in March.

Mike Florio of PFT believes a new contract for Palmer will be coming soon. It’s hard to argue with that, but the real questions are — for how much and how long?

Palmer is set to turn 35 at the end of December. He’s also been in the league for 11 years. Given those factors and that he could easily have more problems with his shoulder, you have to believe the Cardinals will look at extending him for the short-term and not necessarily the long-term.

Either way, Arizona definitely needs to look at keeping Palmer under center. He’s proven that he can lead the Cardinals to wins on a regular basis and that he fits in with what Bruce Arians wants to do on offense.

But with so much football still to be played this season, it’s too early to say how big of a new contract the veteran QB really deserves.
