Seattle Seahawks Need to Give Marshawn Lynch a New Contract

In the midst of all the Seattle Seahawks’ locker room drama, it was reported that this was almost certainly going to be Marshawn Lynch’s last season with the Hawks.

While some of the drama that surrounded Percy Harvin was real, much of it was completely bogus. However, the possibility of Seattle moving on from Lynch is very real, but it is one that was thought probable before training camp even started for three reasons: Lynch will be turning 29 years old, the Hawks have a talented second-year running back in Christine Michael and moving on from Lynch would save some coin against the salary cap.

Lynch likely knew that it was a real possibility, which explains why he initially held out from training camp in hope of getting a raise. Well, he didn’t exactly get what he wanted, and now most people seem to believe that Beast Mode is as good as gone, but hopefully that same thought process does not reside within the Seahawks’ organization.

It took awhile, but the Seahawks routed the New York Giants 38-17 in a record-setting day on the ground. The Hawks rushed for 350 yards. Let that sink in for just a moment because that number is ridiculous.

Earlier in the week, Pete Carroll emphasized that Seattle would return to running the ball with power, and I think it is safe to say that they accomplished that. The Giants were in it for three-fourths of the game, but by the time the game came to a close, they were completely smashed, both physically and mentally.

Of those 350 rushing yards, Lynch was responsible for 140 of them. Oh, and by the way, he also ran for a career-best four touchdowns. I get it, Michael is talented — he even busted off a gorgeous 45-yard run that nearly got him into the end zone, but I think moving on from Lynch would be more than just a gamble — it would be asinine.

I couldn’t even guess how many times today Lynch made me spout out words like “ridiculous” or “unreal” or other sounds that aren’t of any language. I have seen Beast Mode make countless plays like the ones he made against the G-Men, but I will forever remain in awe of his ability.

Yeah, he may be nearing the dreaded age of 30, which is ancient for running backs, but what signs has he shown that he is slowing down? This is still a man that can carry an offense and completely wear a defense down. As a matter of fact, I would bet that Lynch ends the regular season with the most touchdowns he has ever scored in a season.

The NFL is a business, and teams frequently have to make tough choices. This is not one of those times. The Seahawks would be wise to extend the beast, and continue to feed him the ball. They will certainly need to for the remainder of the regular season, because Seattle has the toughest schedule from here on out.
